Amy Griffith - Contemporary Dance Artist
Creating my own dance choreography can be a strenuous and difficult task, as I am someone who enjoys being the performer as the work is in my own hands. Giving my own ideas to others to make their own can be both stressful and beautiful.
During my process of choreographing I find myself thinking a lot about spacial patterns, how I want the dance to travel throughout the space. Dance is a story that’s created with the bodies moving in relation to itself, others as well as the space. I find it extremely important to be conscious of where each body is placed, which way they are facing and how they travel in specific patterns during the journey of the dance. I find it not only important but very interesting and useful for creating a cohesive piece of work.
As a dance artist making my own work I understand the importance of the atmosphere created in the room. I find it fascinating to feel an overwhelming (or underwhelming) amount of emotion while watching dance. It is a great way to either share a statement or take people out of the real world for a couple of minutes. This is where the magic is created in dance. When creating my own choreography I normally start with a short phrase and see how I am able to expand it. Its like planting a seed. Once I get started on something, anything, the rest begins to create itself. Within the choreography growing, thats when I will decide to add details such as relationships, storylines or anything else that started to happening during the process.
The more I create the more I find room for opportunity within movement for not only my own choreography but for my own practice as well. I believe that dance and art in general is what creates the interesting and wonderful qualities of the universe. Keeping this idea in mind sparks my imagination and helps me create and move in different qualitative ways.
