Artist Statement:
"I am a landscape astrophotographer and street photographer based in Vancouver, BC. The night sky has always fascinated me, and the experience of travelling to the middle of nowhere and spending an evening under the stars is one that I want to share with the world. There is a feeling of serenity and even surrealism away from the city's light and noise pollution. We become so used to seeing a drab grey sky with just a few stars and hearing a constant rumble of human activity that a sky lit only by stars, and a soundscape created only by our bodies and a distant owl, seems almost alien. My goal with my astrophotography is to capture that serenity in hopes that it will inspire others to take a break from the city, to travel to the darkness, to experience what it's really like to be human.

With street photography, my goal is to capture those candid moments of humanity, and the beauty of urban decay. By shooting with black and white film, the focus is on the facial expressions and puts my subjects in a more timeless space, showing that while our technology and connectivity may evolve, we all still experience the same emotions."

Bio:
Joel Lagemaat is a multimedia artist specializing in music composition and photography. Born and raised in Lethbridge, Alberta, he has always had an innate connection with music. He is a classically trained pianist, but focuses on electronic music production and composition instead of performance. In 2011, he moved to Vancouver to study sound design at Vancouver Film School and later, music composition and electroacoustics at Simon Fraser University, where he is currently finishing his Bachelor of Fine Arts degree. Joel is an avid adventure seeker, and found his passion for photography while out exploring British Columbia's backcountry. He is always searching for new places to explore and find inspiration, with his camera at his side and his ears always open.
