Kevin Locsin - Artist Statement

I am thoroughly invested in digestible and accessible dance that communicates the nuances of life that are universally relatable. Beyond words, text, or speech, I believe in expression through the use of the body where words would generally fail. I seek to inject storytelling into my artistry, because I am curious about the relationship between dance and theatre. I also believe that it is my responsibility as an artist to create work that transcends the borders of culture, history, and relevancy. I want my work to reach any and all; resonant regardless of any prior knowledge of or experience in contemporary art.
Equipped with both a Hip Hop and Contemporary dance background, I make use of movement that is inherently rhythmic. There is a natural rhythm to my movement practice that I allow to dynamically shift to accommodate impulse, spontaneity, and stillness. My diverse training has ingrained an interest in my work for a fusion of Hip Hop and Contemporary that is highly valued by any audience. I strive to challenge the borders that distinguish these two genres of movement in order to facilitate a respect and admiration on both sides.

Above all, I dance and create art because it is fun. A long time ago, I fell in love with movement in a way that continues to move me every day.
