Rebecca Low Producer Statement
As a theatre producer and arts administrator, I believe that theatre can foster compassion and understanding through the communal sharing of stories. I am an intersectional feminist, and this colours my worldview and informs my approach to theatre. I have trained and practiced as a director and a stage manager, and bring this knowledge and understanding to my practice as a producer and administrator. A passion for, and joy in, attending and experiencing theatre and live performance inspires my work.
I believe that my job as a producer is to break down barriers to participation for audience members, creating opportunities for people to access and enjoy live theatre. I create respectful, healthy, and supportive environments for artists to make their best work, and firmly believe in a one-size-fits-one model for artist and project support. I am excited about logistics, and take deep pride in developing systems that serve organizations, artists, and audiences alike. I prioritize both environmental and organizational sustainability in my work. I explore the ethical and practical implications of all aspects of theatre production and organizational development; from venue selection to ticket sales methods to casting to artist remuneration.
I believe that the purpose of public arts funding is to ensure access to art for the community-at-large, and that publicly funded organizations must serve a communal good in order to be relevant. The theatre community as it stands often mirrors and reinforces the inequities of our society at large, but we can do much better. Through working together and holding one another to account, we can create truly accessible and meaningful work that serves and inspires the general public
