Snail Mail at the Imperial - A Capsule Review

The Imperial located on Main and Hastings is a historical site that has been transformed into a music venue. Originally, the Imperial used to be a movie theatre where Chinese films were played. The venue still reflects some original architecture and Chinese influences. Due to its smaller size and capacity, this venue is ideal if you desire a more intimate concert experience. on January 27th the artist Snail Mail was to perform with the opening act “Choir Boy”. “Choir Boy” unfortunately lacked intrigue and variation. The band is reminiscent of the 80’s with their overly used synthesizers and washed out lead vocals. One could feel that they have been transported back in time to a 80’s romantic comedy. However, the band didn't lack in musical ability. All members showed talent and possible room to grow. After a few songs their set became boring and repetitive. The main event following was indie rock newcomer Snail Mail. For being only 19 years old, lead singer songwriter Jordan shows immense talent and musical ability. Opening with one of her mot popular songs Heat Wave, she kept the energy and intrigue in the crowd for the entire duration of the concert. The bands musical talent was top notch and well rehearsed. Her set was only an hour and a half with no encore as she stated she, “didn’t want to”.  Her interaction with he crowd besides that line was pretty limited and mostly focused on the music. Her most memorable song was “Pristine” when the entire audience started singing along in unison. At the end of the show she played a few songs solo with just her and her guitar. These songs were a nice break from the loud drums and bass guitar that accompanied her earlier. Here she really showcased her vocal talent and really wowed me and probably the entire audience Overall, Snail Mail is a must see Indie rock artist that has a promising career ahead of her.
