A Quick Chat With Emerging Artist Cindy Hua by Ravneet K. Sidhu

Cindy Hua is a Chinese artist, who is currently completing her final semester at SFU with a double minor in extended visual arts and contemporary arts. Having moved to Winnipeg and then Vancouver due to school, her experiences play a major role in her art practice.

Q: What type of mediums or style of art do you focus on?

A: In the past I focused on installation work and photography, however in my final year I’ve been working with graphic design more.

Q: Is there a specific reason that you moved to work with graphic design more?

A: My friend actually really inspired me. In second year, I saw her working on a graphic design project, and I just found that even more captivating than what I was working with at the time!

Q: Is there a theme in your artwork?

A: Yes, all of my work actually relates back to my life. I incorporate personal experiences and create pieces off of that. For example, I created a print about my cat, they were my first pet, and a really important part of my childhood. They represent me and I wanted to show that in my print.

Q: Moving is always a very personal experience for someone to go through. It’s now been almost 5 years since you moved to Vancouver from Winnipeg, how has this experience effected your art practice?

A: I’m not sure. In regards to how I spend my free time in Winnipeg I usually did drawings of cartoon characters, however now I usually play with Lego or Bandai models.

Q: Why did you choose to study art?

A: In high school I couldn’t study math and science, I really liked my art teacher in high school, I have also been studying drawings since primary school.

Q: Is there a dream project you want to work on? Or someone who you really want to collaborate with?

A: I want to work on a piece with my friend who inspired me to go into graphic design. It  would be amazing if I could work with her, someone who inspired me to choose this medium.

Q: You are now almost done with university, has there been any advice that has really stuck and helped you out, over these past few years?

A: ‘Just be yourself, this is a creative space for people. There is no right or wrong within the art field. You create work to express yourself.’ I don’t remember who said it but, this saying has really helped me grow as an artist and not shy away from trying to create pieces which I was really interested in. I know as I continue on to my masters, this is still something I will think about.
