Matt Of All Trades
Matt brown is a multidisciplinary artist who is currently in the music program at the SCA. Matt’s journey of self discovery as an artist manifested in the form of branching out and exploring different mediums. I sat down with matt to discuss growth, his art and how his professional practice differs from his private private one.
MG: Who are you and what do you do?
MB:I’m Matt, I write music ,I take photos, I do some design work. I go to school for music but I have been exploring a-lot of stuff other than that….So I would say I am sort of in many different directions.
MG: Thats cool, I feel like everyone is in many different directions…in a perfect world, if you could pursue a career as an artist with one discipline. What would it be and why?
MB: I'd have to say maybe design…Like Graphic design. Because with music, as much as I like to write it I’d also like graphic design alot . Right now I design many posts for instagram and social media and stuff like that.
MG:That makes a-lot of sense. I see a-lot of those “woke” information things on insta and I love them , I always wondered who made them haha?
MB:OH YEA! They are called infographics, most of the ones you see on instagram combine graphic design with information about significant world events and stuff like that.
MG: Thats actually a great segway to my next question.Do you feel like you could make a substantial impact with your practice? Are you even looking to make an “impact”with your practice….The basic question is do you choose who you work with based on your values?
MB: I work with brands for marketing purposed. Most of them are skincare brands, often they align with my values .I won’t say it is world changing, it is more of like in the advertising realm.
MG: Yea, not everything has to be world changing…
MB: Yea,Exaclty!
MG: What caused the shift of chosen medium in your practice?
MB: I am really into doing everything and I try to have every base covered……but with music I don’t think I could make the kind of income I will be able to make by combining all of my interests.
MG: What type of work do make with graphic design? Do you ever get personal with the designs you make.
MB:With brands I do reviews , guides and little infographics. When I do graphic design by my self is mostly reviews too. But as far as my personal touch in art, my personality usually shines when I'm making music or taking photos.
MG: In that sense what medium do you feel more comfortable with?
MB: I feel like if I wasn’t working in a marketing space I definitely would add a bit more a personal touch to my design. I also don’t know what it’ll look like yet.
MG:What about your photography what do you enjoy about it?
MB: I am really fascinated by product photography, the idea of directing an inanimate object and making it stand out and look appealing is very fascinating to me.
MG: My final question for you is what does growth look like for you in both graphic design and photography.
MB: With graphic design it really comes down with how engaging my content is to the viewer over time. I have come to learn the ins and outs of social media marketing and audience engagement and I expect my knowledge to grow overtime .With photography its along the same line. I want to keep on pursuing product photography and pushing the boundary of making inanimate objects more engaging and interesting.
