What is really real?

In the midst of a pandemic, where health is coveted, it is hard to imagine a period of wellness unencumbered by masks, social distance and hand sanitizer. In these trying times people often turn to the health industry for quick solutions to cure their illness which may prompt advertisers to promise unreal remedies. It is around these premises of hope and deception that Vancouver based choreographer Julianne Chapple designed a piece entitled City of Glass, performed by fellow Vancouver artists, Maxine Chadburn. On March 12, 2021 Mile Zero dance, an Edmonton based non-profit organization, livestreamed an hour of Chapple’s work that incorporates contemporary dance, spoken word, digital images, and soundscape. Mile Zero has worked within the dance community since 1985 and has strived to endorse Canadian performers by promoting their work to a greater audience. Due to COVID-19 the piece was presented online which allowed audience members to briefly escape from reality, create their own personal wellness spaces and dive into a calming virtual reality centered around the illusion of wellness. I took full advantage of the concept of wellness by viewing this piece with my laptop placed at the ideal level and relaxing in my cozy lounge room. Ironically, the global pandemic and self-isolation gave the choreographer the unique opportunity to pursue different skills which ultimately led her to delve into the vast concept of health and wellness to produce a film heavily influenced by COVID-19. Chapple’s dance piece endeavored to portray themes of scientific vs unscientific health claims while highlighting how these factors can affect the duration of a person’s lifetime. I am going to discuss whether these themes were successfully captured through the lens of film while comparing City of Glass with Chapple’s previous work, Self-Portrait.
